The DC Contractor
Hello, I am Aaron Dickerson and I am really glad you found us.
I have been working in the trades since I was 16 years old, growing up in Elkhart, Indiana. I got started helping my mother and father build an electrical company. It was a big leap for them after 20 years of factory work for my father and my mother in the middle of raising 4 kids. I am still proud of them and happy to say that the business is operating 20 years later.
While working (and not a little arguing) with my dad, I received (and taught) a crash course in estimating, project management, contract negotiation as well as design and installation; it was an invaluable experience.
After an Americorps term in Alaska, I got a call from a close friend and went to volunteer in Rockaway Park, NY after Superstorm Sandy. It was there that I saw firsthand how important it is for homeowners to have the knowledge they needed to make informed decisions.
Volunteering on my own and with a non-profit we went through neighborhoods, often door to door, inspecting damage, gutting homes and providing people with the information they needed to take the next best step in rebuilding their homes.
Helping those homeowners turn knowledge into power and ensuring that they held the reins in an incredibly difficult situation changed the way I view my work. A house isn’t just a home, it is generational wealth, it is a dream and it is a safe haven.
After moving back to DC in March of 2020 I went to work for a Design/Build firm in the DMV area. I was astonished by the fees we were charging and deeply frustrated by the lack of customer service.
Growing up in Indiana if you were able to see a 10%-15% profit on a job you told your friends about it. If you saw 20% you went on vacation and bought a round for your friends. After running the numbers on a few of our jobs I realized that we were seeing profit margins in the 30%/40%/50% range and providing a wildly inferior client experience. The DC Contractor was born in that moment.
You deserve the knowledge and experience to be treated fairly during your home buying and renovation process and it should not come at an outrageous cost. Whether you engage us for a walkthrough or you want our help managing your entire renovation you will walk away knowing much more than you did before we met and leave us with the confidence to take the next step.
It is my goal to make sure that every home owner or prospective home buyer leaves me and my business empowered. Knowing that they have made the right decision for themselves and their families.
Take care and look forward to meeting you,
Aaron Dickerson
